HP iPAQ RX1955: The 2005 Windows Pocket PC Experience

Revisiting my first PDA that I bought in my college days! Word processing, MP3 and WMV playback, and internet access over wi-fi all in one handheld device, wooow. And hey, it's not a bad gaming device either.

A Cornel : A Dedicated Solitaire button? Now that's something we need back in our devices. Far more useful than a dedicated Bixby button.
Don Carlin : The PDA craze never died out, we simply replaced them with smart phones and tablets.
BayAreaNewMan : The “WiFi certified b”on the box, is because I certified this device personally working for the WiFi alliance in 2003 at Agilent Technology in Santa Clara!! Good times!!
control the pet population : I had an older iPAQ, back before the merger and they were still a Compaq product... I didn't want one, somebody acquired my credit card information and ordered like eight of them at $400 each. So I called the bank and said "hold up!!" ... thankfully the bank was pretty cool about the situation and reversed the charges within two weeks or so and everything was fine... Then about a week or so after that, an iPaq 3765 arrives on my doorstep. Apparently the guy that ordered it somehow used my "billing address" for one of the shipments... and I ended up with one of them. I fully intended to call the bank and tell them... but then I got high or drunk or whatever... I was in my mid-20s at the time... and I promptly forgot about it... it sat on the corner of my desk piled under various papers and shit for a good year or so... never even used it. Eventually sold it to a co-worker for $250... So, the moral of the story is that being the victim of identity theft sometimes has a silver lining.

Mike S : His 13 year old PDA is more responsive than my year old budget phone.
DutchDuke : You should make a series of this kinda stuff.
"Innovations of the past"
Ground breaking technology of today becomes obsolete in just a few years time.
Love to see you review old relics from the past.
Lemons : Oh god, oh no... Linus is explaining what a PDA was. Dear lord I'm getting old
Asa Boyes : I love these kind of retrospective videos hosted by Linus, I think it really demonstrates his passion for technology more than a video about the latest and greatest hardware in a'lot of cases.
OLBastholm : I'm getting old... My dad had several PDAs, and eventually got some with phone capabilities built in(!), so I sometimes played games on them. In my head Windows Mobile was the coolest thing ever!

EDIT
I played Bubble Breaker ALL. THE. TIME. This is so nostalgic!

A Windows PC in your Pocket

Back before smartphones were ubiquitous in terms of portable computing, another device was popular. This week, we take a look at the HP iPaq h2215, a Windows Mobile PocketPC from 2003.

Stay tuned for next time for a demonstration of some of the hardware peripherals this thing can use.

Also check out LGR's video on the iPaq rx1955:

LGR : Ha, that intro. The world of YouTube retro tech coverage is amusingly small indeed.

Oh well, hooray for more PocketPC coverage! Looking forward to seeing more of that camera in action :)
LoadGamePL : Man, this thing back in 2003 must have been amazing
Tom Brown : That is such a cool portable PC! I love this vintage tech. I wish Microsoft would make a modern refresh of this portable PC.
DrekiTech : I had that exact HP! I used it to emulate NES and listen to music and it was so cool. There was an Opera browser for it that gave it better website functionality.

Edit: yeah you mentioned it later in the video :)
Erik Nilsen : My grandpa gave me a couple of those to mess around with when I was in middle school ~6 years ago. Great fun. Also helped me type some last-minute school assignments before I had my own laptop.
